If your EPG guide on IPTV is not loading, the channels usually still play but the guide shows “No information”, stays blank, or lists the wrong shows. That happens because the guide is a separate data file (usually XMLTV) that your app downloads on its own schedule. When that download fails, is out of date, or cannot be matched to your channels, the guide breaks while the streams keep working.
The good news: an EPG problem is rarely a sign that your service is down. This guide helps you find which of five causes you are dealing with, then gives numbered fixes for TiviMate, IPTV Smarters Pro and VLC.
Quick diagnosis: what does your guide actually show?
Look at the guide for 30 seconds and match the symptom. Each one points to a different cause, so this saves you from trying every fix blindly.
| What you see | Most likely cause | Go to fix |
|---|---|---|
| Whole guide blank, every channel says “No information” | EPG never downloaded or the EPG URL is wrong | Cause 1 |
| Guide worked yesterday, now empty or stuck on old dates | Cached guide expired, auto update not running | Cause 2 |
| Guide shows, but everything is off by 1 hour or more | Device clock, time zone or EPG offset | Cause 3 |
| Most channels fine, a few say “No information” | Channel IDs do not match the guide data | Cause 4 |
| App freezes or crashes while “Updating EPG” | Guide file too large for the device | Cause 5 |
Before anything else, restart the device fully (unplug it for 30 seconds) and open the app again. If the guide comes back, it was a stuck download.
Cause 1: the EPG URL is missing or wrong
With an M3U playlist, the guide address is either embedded in the playlist header (the url-tvg or x-tvg-url tag) or given to you separately by the provider. With an Xtream Codes login, most apps fetch the guide automatically from the same server. If you added the playlist by M3U link and the provider gave you a separate XMLTV link, the app may simply have no guide source at all. Our explainer on how M3U playlists and EPG links fit together covers this in more detail.
- Check your welcome email for an EPG or XMLTV link (it often ends in xmltv.php or .xml.gz).
- Paste that link into a browser on your phone. If it downloads a file, the link works. If it errors, contact your provider.
- If your provider supports Xtream Codes, re-add the playlist with your username, password and server URL instead of the M3U link. The guide is usually pulled automatically.
- In TiviMate, open Settings, then EPG, then EPG sources, and add the XMLTV link if none is listed.
- In IPTV Smarters Pro, use the refresh or “Refresh EPG” option for your profile, or log out and log back in with Xtream details.
Cause 2: the guide is stale or not updating
Apps keep a copy of the guide and refresh it on a timer. If the timer is long, or updates are disabled, the guide eventually runs out of data and goes blank. Clearing the old copy and forcing a fresh download fixes most cases.
- TiviMate: go to Settings, then EPG, choose Clear EPG, then Update EPG. While you are there, set the update interval to every 12 or 24 hours. Note that automatic background EPG updates are a TiviMate Premium feature; on the free version you may need to update manually.
- IPTV Smarters Pro: open the EPG settings for your profile and run a manual refresh. If the app has a Clear Cache option in its general settings, use it first.
- Device level (Fire TV, Android TV): go to Settings, Applications, Manage Installed Applications, pick the app and choose Clear cache. Avoid Clear data unless you are ready to re-enter your login.
Cause 3: times are shifted by an hour or more
If shows appear but at the wrong times, the guide downloaded fine. The problem is time. Guide data is usually published in UTC and converted using your device clock, so a wrong time zone or a provider that ships the wrong offset will shift everything.
- Set the device clock to automatic. On Fire TV and Android TV this lives under the device’s Date and Time or Preferences settings. Confirm the time zone matches where you live.
- TiviMate: go to Settings, EPG, EPG sources, select the source and adjust its time offset (for example -1:00 or +1:00), then run Update EPG.
- IPTV Smarters Pro: look for the EPG Time Shift setting and move it in one-hour steps until the guide matches what is airing.
- If only one or two channels are off, use a per-channel offset where your app supports it rather than shifting the whole guide.
Cause 4: some channels say “No information”
Every channel in the playlist carries an ID (the tvg-id). The guide file lists programs under IDs too. When the two do not match, that channel shows nothing even though the guide loaded. This is common after a provider renames channels or when you combine guides from different sources.
- In TiviMate, highlight the channel, long-press OK to open channel options, and use Assign EPG to search for and pick the right guide entry.
- In other apps, there is often no manual mapping, so report the channel names to your provider and ask them to fix the IDs.
- Remember that some channels (24/7 movie loops, event-only PPV feeds) may never have guide data. That is normal.
Cause 5: the guide is too big for your device
A guide covering thousands of channels and two weeks of listings can be a large file. Older or low-memory sticks may stall or crash while loading it. You can make the job lighter without losing anything you watch.
- Hide channel groups you never watch so the app maps fewer channels.
- In TiviMate, reduce how many past days of guide to keep (one to three days is plenty).
- Turn off “Update on app start” in TiviMate’s EPG settings if startup is slow, and rely on the scheduled update instead.
- Check free storage. On Fire TV, go to Settings, My Fire TV, About, Storage. If space is nearly full, uninstall apps you do not use.
What about VLC and other basic players?
VLC is a great test tool but not a full IPTV guide app. It can open an M3U playlist and play the channels, but it does not show a grid-style TV guide the way TiviMate or Smarters does. If you need a working guide, use a dedicated IPTV player; our ranking of the best IPTV players compares which ones handle EPG well. Keep in mind that player apps ship no channels or guide data of their own; everything comes from your provider.
If you have tried every fix above and the guide is still empty on two different apps, the problem is almost certainly on the provider side. Send them your app name, the symptom and the time you noticed it. A reliable service will fix guide feeds quickly. Our own plan, IPTV Journal, includes a full EPG and 24/7 support for one flat price of $89 for 12 months, which you can check on the IPTV Journal pricing section. For broader connection problems, see our general IPTV troubleshooting guide, and if channels also stall, our guide on how an IPTV stream works and why it buffers explains the delivery side.
How to keep your guide working
- Use Xtream Codes login where your provider offers it; guide setup is usually automatic.
- Schedule guide updates every 12 to 24 hours rather than on every launch.
- Keep the device clock on automatic.
FAQ
Why do my IPTV channels play but the guide is empty?
Streams and guide data come from different sources. The channels can work perfectly while the XMLTV guide file fails to download, is out of date or does not match your channel IDs. Clearing and updating the EPG fixes most cases.
How often should the EPG update?
Every 12 to 24 hours is a good balance for most people. Updating on every app start can slow down cheaper devices, while waiting several days can leave the guide empty.
Why is my IPTV guide one hour off?
Usually the device time zone is wrong or daylight saving has not been applied to the guide. Set the clock to automatic first, then use your app’s EPG offset or time shift setting if it is still off.
Does TiviMate free show the EPG?
Yes, the free version shows a TV guide. Automatic background guide updates are listed as a Premium feature, so free users may need to run Update EPG manually from the settings.
Can I add my own EPG source?
Many apps, including TiviMate, let you add an XMLTV link as an extra EPG source. Use a guide source your provider supports or recommends, since channel IDs must match your playlist for listings to appear.
