There are two simple answers to how to watch Channel 4 on smart TV. For live TV, tune in to channel 4 (or 104 for HD) through Freeview, Freesat or Freely. For on demand, install the free Channel 4 app, which runs on most smart TV platforms including Samsung, LG, Google TV, Roku, Amazon Fire TV and Freeview Play TVs. Sign in once with a free Channel 4 account and you have access to box sets, catch-up and more.
This guide covers each method, sign-in steps, and what to do if the app is missing or not working.
Option 1: Watch Channel 4 live through your aerial or dish
If your smart TV has a Freeview tuner and an aerial connected, Channel 4 is on channel 4, with Channel 4 HD on 104 in most of the UK. In Wales, channel 4 carries S4C and Channel 4 sits on a different number, so check your guide.
- Freeview: Channel 4, E4, More4, Film4 and 4seven are all on Freeview, along with +1 versions.
- Freesat: Channel 4 and its sister channels are also on Freesat, if you have a dish.
- Freely: on newer TVs with Freely built in, Channel 4 streams live over broadband with no aerial needed.
For a full rundown of where Channel 4’s channels sit, see Freeview’s Channel Checker. Live viewing needs a TV Licence.
Option 2: Use the Channel 4 app
The Channel 4 app is free and is the main way to watch Channel 4 programmes on demand. Channel 4’s help pages list a wide range of supported platforms, including:
| Platform | Where to find the app |
|---|---|
| Samsung smart TVs | Samsung’s app store (Apps) |
| LG smart TVs | LG Content Store |
| Google TV and Android TV | Google Play Store on the TV |
| Freeview Play TVs and boxes | Built into the TV guide and apps menu |
| YouView boxes | Apps or players menu |
| Roku TVs and players | Roku Channel Store |
| Amazon Fire TV | Amazon Appstore |
| Sky and Virgin Media boxes | Apps section of the box |
| Games consoles | Xbox and PlayStation stores (supported models vary) |
Older smart TVs sometimes lose app support as manufacturers stop updating them. If your TV model is a few years old and the app is missing, a streaming stick is often the easiest fix.
How to install and sign in
- Open your TV’s app store from the home screen.
- Search for Channel 4 and install the official app.
- Open the app. You will be asked to sign in or create a free account.
- Choose a sign-in method: scan the QR code with your phone, visit channel4.com/code on another device and enter the code shown, or type your details with the remote.
- Once signed in, browse box sets, catch-up and live channels in the app.
Channel 4 notes that QR code sign-in is not supported on Roku or Amazon Fire devices, so use the code method on those. The service is free and never asks you to pay to download the app or register.
Live TV inside the Channel 4 app
As well as on-demand programmes, the Channel 4 apps include a live section for Channel 4’s channels, subject to rights. This is handy if your TV has no aerial. Remember that watching anything live, including inside the app, needs a TV Licence. Watching on demand only does not.
Problems and fixes
| Problem | Fix |
|---|---|
| App not in the store | Check for a TV software update. If your model is no longer supported, use a streaming stick. |
| Sign-in code not working | Make sure you are signed in to the right account on your phone or computer, and request a new code. |
| Buffering | Use a wired connection if possible, restart the router and close other apps. |
| Programme unavailable | Some titles are time-limited or restricted by rights. Check the expiry date on the programme page. |
| App crashes | Clear the app’s cache or data in the TV settings, or uninstall and reinstall. |
| Not available abroad | Channel 4’s streaming service is for UK viewers. |

If your TV is not smart (or not smart enough)
A streaming stick plugged into an HDMI port adds the Channel 4 app and the other UK broadcaster apps to almost any TV. Fire TV, Roku and Google TV devices all support Channel 4. Our guide to the best streaming devices for non-smart TVs compares the options and what each one costs.
You can also cast from the Channel 4 app on an iPhone or Android phone to a Chromecast-enabled TV. Channel 4 notes that Google Home voice control for Chromecast is no longer supported, but casting from the app still works.
Putting it together
For most UK homes, the simplest setup is a smart TV with Freeview for live Channel 4 and the Channel 4 app for box sets. If you want a single subscription with a wide range of live channels as well, some people add IPTV; check the service is licensed for what it shows and understand the UK rules. Our own plan, IPTV Journal, costs $89 for 12 months, and you can see it on our pricing page.
