Short answer: IPTV on PlayStation 5 is not really possible the usual way. At the time of writing, the PlayStation Store has no general-purpose IPTV player that loads an M3U playlist or Xtream login, and the console has no official web browser. You can still watch live TV on a PS5 through licensed apps, and you can get your IPTV playlist onto the same TV with a small add-on device. This guide explains what works, what does not, and the setup we recommend.
Why the PS5 is different from Xbox
Xbox consoles run Microsoft Store apps, which include IPTV players like MyIPTV Player. Sony runs a much tighter store. PS5 media apps come from big streaming companies, and Sony has not opened it to the small developers who make IPTV players. That is why searches for “TiviMate PS5” or “IPTV Smarters PS5” lead nowhere official.
Be careful with sites that claim to have a PS5 IPTV app download. There is no way to sideload apps on a retail PS5, so anything asking you to install a file or change system software is not legitimate.
What about the hidden PS5 browser?
The PS5 does contain a basic browser, but it is not meant for general use. It can be reached indirectly through screens such as the User Guide or account-linking pages, and people use those paths to open other sites. Reports since launch show its limits: text pages load, but embedded video is unreliable, full screen often fails, and many media players do not run.
That makes it a poor way to watch IPTV. Even if a provider has a web player, you are fighting a browser with no address bar, no bookmarks, and patchy video support. We do not recommend building your setup around it.
Licensed live TV apps that do work on PS5
If your goal is live channels on the PS5 itself, several licensed services have PS5 apps in the US. These need no playlist at all.
| App | What you get | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| YouTube TV | Cable-style live TV with local channels in most US markets | Paid monthly |
| Sling TV | Smaller live packages with sports add-ons | Paid monthly |
| Pluto TV | Hundreds of free ad-supported channels | Free |
| Tubi | Free movies and shows plus live FAST channels | Free |
| Plex | Free ad-supported live channels and your own media server | Free, optional paid tier |
App availability can vary by region and changes over time, so check the PlayStation Store on your console.
The setup that actually works: a streaming device on another HDMI port
The cleanest way to get your IPTV subscription on the TV where your PS5 lives is to add a streaming device on a free HDMI input. You switch inputs with the TV remote, and each box does what it is good at.
- Pick a device with good IPTV player support, such as a Fire TV Stick, a Google TV device or an Apple TV. Our list of streaming devices for any TV with HDMI compares them.
- Plug it into a spare HDMI port on your TV and connect it to Wi-Fi or Ethernet.
- Install an IPTV player app; our ranking of the best IPTV players covers the strongest options per platform.
- Add your M3U URL or Xtream login and your EPG link from your provider.
- If your TV supports HDMI-CEC, turn it on so the TV switches input when you press a button on either device’s remote.
Short on HDMI ports? A powered HDMI switch costs little and solves it. If your PS5 sits on a monitor without spare ports, a streaming stick in the TV elsewhere in the house still gives you the same channels.
Other workarounds people try (and how well they work)
| Workaround | Works? | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Casting from a phone | No | The PS5 does not accept Chromecast or AirPlay streams |
| PS5 Media Gallery from USB | Only for files | It plays video files you own, not live streams |
| Hidden browser to a web player | Unreliable | Video playback and full screen are inconsistent |
| Plex Live TV | For free channels | Plex’s live channels are its own lineup, not your IPTV playlist |
| Streaming stick on another HDMI input | Yes | Full IPTV player apps with guide and favorites |
A quick legal note: IPTV as a technology is legal, but services that rebroadcast channels without licenses are not. Check what your provider has rights to and follow your local law. Player apps never include channels; they only play the playlist you load.
Which option should you choose?
If you only need mainstream channels, a licensed app on the PS5 is the simplest route. If you already have an IPTV subscription, put it on a dedicated streaming device next to the console. It costs less than a month of most cable bills, it gets a real guide and favorites, and you never fight the PS5 browser.
If you are shopping for a service to load into that device, our own IPTV Journal plan is a single 12-month subscription for $89 (about $7.40 a month), and it works with the main players on Fire TV, Google TV and Apple TV. Read how to subscribe to IPTV safely whichever provider you choose.
FAQ
Is there an IPTV app for PS5?
Not in the sense of an M3U or Xtream player. At the time of writing, the PlayStation Store carries licensed streaming apps but no general IPTV player. Sites offering a PS5 IPTV download should be avoided.
Can I use IPTV Smarters or TiviMate on PS5?
No. Neither app is available for PlayStation. They run on Android, Fire TV and some other platforms, so use one of those devices on another HDMI input.
Does the PS5 have a web browser?
Not an official one. A basic browser can be reached through certain system screens, but video playback in it is unreliable, so it is not a practical IPTV player.
Can I cast IPTV from my phone to a PS5?
No. The PS5 does not support Chromecast or AirPlay. Cast to a TV or a streaming device that supports those standards instead.
Is Xbox better than PS5 for IPTV?
Yes, for this one job. Xbox has IPTV players such as MyIPTV Player in the Microsoft Store. On PS5, a separate streaming device is the practical answer.
