IPTV catch up TV lets you go back in the TV guide and play a program that already aired, usually from the last one to seven days, without having recorded it yourself. Your provider keeps a rolling archive of selected channels on its servers, and your player app asks for the right slice of that archive when you pick a past show. Nothing is stored on your device.
Below, catch-up TV is explained step by step: what happens behind the scenes, how it differs from recording, how to use it in TiviMate and IPTV Smarters Pro, and a quick diagnosis when the archive will not play.
How catch-up works behind the scenes
A live IPTV channel is a continuous stream cut into small chunks. For catch-up, the provider simply keeps those chunks for a set number of days instead of discarding them. When you select an old program in the guide, the app sends the server the channel, start time and duration, and the server replays that window.
- The provider enables archive on a channel and chooses how many days to keep.
- Your playlist or Xtream Codes account flags that channel as having catch-up (in Xtream accounts this is the tv_archive flag with a duration in days).
- Your app shows a catch-up icon or highlights past programs in the guide.
- You pick a past program and the app builds a time-based request to the server.
- The server streams the archived chunks, and you can pause, rewind or fast-forward.
Because the guide times drive those requests, a working EPG is essential. If your guide is shifted by an hour, catch-up will start at the wrong place too. If that is happening, fix the guide first with our EPG not loading guide.
Catch-up vs recording vs timeshift
These three features sound similar but solve different problems. Knowing which one you have avoids a lot of confusion.
| Feature | Where the video lives | What you control | Typical limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Catch-up (archive) | Provider’s servers | Any past show on enabled channels | Set by provider, often a few days |
| Recording (PVR/DVR) | Your device, USB drive or NAS, or a cloud DVR | Only what you scheduled | Your storage space |
| Timeshift (pause live) | Temporary buffer | Pause and rewind the current show | Minutes to a couple of hours |
If you want to keep a show for weeks, catch-up is not the answer; you need a recording feature or a cloud DVR. Our look at US live TV options with locals, sports and DVR compares how cloud DVRs handle that.
Which apps support catch-up?
Catch-up is a two-part feature: the provider must offer archives, and the app must know how to request them. Player apps ship no channels and no archives of their own.
- TiviMate (Android TV, Fire TV, Google TV): supports catch-up. It is part of the Premium tier, so the free version will not play archives.
- IPTV Smarters Pro: has a Catch Up section on its main menu. It stays empty if your provider has no archive channels.
- VLC: plays live M3U channels but has no guide, so it cannot browse or request archived programs.
- Other dedicated players: support varies by app and by playlist type. Xtream Codes logins usually work more reliably than plain M3U links for catch-up.

How to use catch-up in TiviMate and Smarters
TiviMate
- Make sure TiviMate Premium is active and the guide is loaded.
- Open the TV guide and scroll left into past time slots. Channels with archive show a catch-up marker.
- Select a past program and choose to play it. Use the progress bar to skip within the show.
- If programs start a few minutes early or late, adjust the EPG offset for that source and update the guide.
IPTV Smarters Pro
- From the home screen, open Catch Up.
- Pick a category, then a channel with archive.
- Choose a date and a past program from the list to play it.
- If the list is empty, check with your provider that catch-up is enabled on your account.
Catch-up not working? Quick diagnosis
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| No catch-up icons at all | Provider has no archive, or app does not support it | Ask provider; try Xtream login; check app tier |
| Icon shows but playback errors | Program is older than the archive window | Pick something more recent |
| Plays the wrong show | Guide time offset | Fix device clock and EPG offset |
| Plays, then buffers heavily | Archive server or your network | Test a live channel; see buffering fixes |
| Worked in one app, not another | App uses a different request format | Use the app your provider recommends |
If archived shows buffer while live ones play fine, the archive server may be under load. If both buffer, it is a network or device issue. Our guide on how IPTV streams travel and why they buffer walks through that.
What to look for in a provider’s catch-up
- Which channels have archive (often news, sports and major networks, not every channel).
- How many days are kept per channel.
- Whether catch-up works on your preferred app and device.
- Whether the service is properly licensed for the channels it offers. Catch-up is a normal feature on many legal TV platforms; it is the rights to the content that matter, so check local law.
If you want a single plan with catch-up support on many channels, our own IPTV Journal plan costs $89 for 12 months and works with the major player apps. Details are in the IPTV Journal pricing section.
FAQ
Is IPTV catch-up the same as recording?
No. Catch-up plays shows from the provider’s server archive, so you need no storage, but only for the days the provider keeps. Recording saves a copy you control, for as long as you have space.
How many days back can I watch?
It depends entirely on the provider and the channel. Some channels have no archive, others keep several days. Your app usually shows the available range in the guide.
Why does catch-up start at the wrong time?
The app asks the server for a time window based on the guide. If the guide or device clock is off, the request is off too. Correct the clock and the EPG offset, then try again.
Do I need TiviMate Premium for catch-up?
Yes, catch-up is one of the features unlocked by TiviMate Premium. The free version can still play live channels and show the guide.
Can VLC play IPTV catch-up?
Not in a practical way. VLC has no TV guide for IPTV playlists, so it cannot browse past programs or build archive requests. Use a dedicated IPTV player instead.
