To watch Monday Night Football without cable, you need ESPN through a streaming service such as ESPN Unlimited (around $31.99 a month at the time of writing) or a live TV app that carries ESPN. The good news is that many Monday games are also simulcast on ABC, which you can watch free with an antenna. The trick is knowing which weeks are ABC weeks and which are ESPN-only, so you only pay when you need to.
ESPN, ABC or both: how Monday nights are split in 2026
ESPN holds the Monday Night Football package. For the 2026 season, ESPN announced 17 Monday matchups, with 10 of them also airing on ABC and the rest exclusive to ESPN. Several ABC simulcasts fall in the first half of the season.
ESPN’s package also includes a Week 18 Saturday doubleheader on ESPN/ABC, a Wild Card game and a Divisional round game, and Super Bowl LXI on February 14, 2027, which also airs on ABC. Our NFL 2026 where-to-watch guide lists where every window airs; this page is about building the cheapest Monday setup.
| Type of Monday game | Free with antenna? | What you need |
|---|---|---|
| ESPN + ABC simulcast | Yes, on your local ABC station | An HD antenna, or any service with ABC |
| ESPN exclusive | No | ESPN Unlimited or a live TV service with ESPN |
| ManningCast (alternate broadcast) | No | ESPN2 or the ESPN app with an ESPN subscription |
Schedules can shift, so check ESPN’s official schedule each week, especially later in the season when flex scheduling and doubleheaders come into play.
The free route: an antenna for ABC weeks
If your local ABC station comes in clearly over the air, every simulcast Monday game costs you nothing after a one-time antenna purchase. An indoor antenna works for many city and suburban homes; rural homes may need an outdoor or attic model. Our guide to the best TV antenna for local channels explains how to choose one based on your distance from the towers.
- Look up which direction and how far your ABC transmitter is using a free signal map such as the FCC’s DTV reception map.
- Place the antenna high and near a window facing the towers.
- Run a channel scan on your TV and confirm ABC is in the list.
- Rescan whenever you move the antenna or after stations change frequencies.
An antenna will never get you ESPN-only games, but it can cut the number of months you need to pay for ESPN.
The paid route: ESPN Unlimited or a live TV service
For the ESPN-only Mondays, you have two legal choices.
ESPN Unlimited
ESPN Unlimited is ESPN’s direct-to-consumer plan. At the time of writing it was around $31.99 a month or $319.99 a year, after a price increase in September 2026. It streams ESPN, ESPN2 and the other ESPN networks in the ESPN app, so you get the main broadcast and the ManningCast. Bundles with Disney+ and Hulu, FOX One or NFL+ Premium are also offered. See our ESPN streaming service guide for the full breakdown.
Be careful not to buy ESPN Select (the plan formerly called ESPN+) by mistake. It does not include the ESPN cable channels, so it does not carry Monday Night Football.
Live TV streaming services
YouTube TV, Hulu + Live TV, Sling Orange, Fubo and DirecTV all carry ESPN in at least one plan. They cost more than ESPN Unlimited, often $45 to $85 a month or more, but they also include many other channels and usually a cloud DVR. If you already pay for one, your login also unlocks the ESPN app at no extra cost.
A season plan that keeps costs low
You do not need to pay for ESPN all season if the schedule works in your favor. A simple approach:
- Use the antenna for every ABC simulcast.
- Check the schedule at the start of each month. If that month includes ESPN-only games you care about, subscribe to ESPN Unlimited for that month.
- Cancel before the next billing date if the following month is mostly ABC weeks or games you do not care about.
- Keep in mind that the Wild Card and Divisional games ESPN airs in January are simulcast on ABC too.
If you prefer one subscription for news, entertainment and international channels as well, our IPTV Journal plan is 12 months for $89. Whatever you choose, stick with services that hold the rights to what they show; unofficial ESPN streams are unlicensed and tend to fail at the worst moment.
Watching on your TV, phone or on the road
The ESPN app runs on Roku, Fire TV, Apple TV, Google TV, game consoles, most smart TVs, phones and the web. When you travel within the US, your ESPN Unlimited subscription works the same way, though some events can be subject to blackout rules depending on your location.
For the smoothest picture, use a wired connection or a strong Wi-Fi signal, and close the app fully and reopen it if the stream drifts behind live.
Which Monday Night Football setup is right for you?
If you only watch the big matchups and many of them are on ABC, start with an antenna and add ESPN Unlimited only in months with ESPN-only games you care about. If you watch every Monday, plus college football and other ESPN sports, a year of ESPN Unlimited or a live TV service is simpler. Fans who also want RedZone on Sundays should compare the ESPN Unlimited and NFL+ Premium bundle against buying each one separately.
FAQ
Is Monday Night Football on ABC every week?
No. In 2026 ESPN said 10 of its 17 Monday matchups air on ABC as well as ESPN, while the rest are ESPN exclusives. Check the weekly schedule to see which games are simulcast.
Can I watch Monday Night Football with ESPN Select?
No. ESPN Select, formerly ESPN+, does not include the ESPN cable channels. You need ESPN Unlimited, a live TV service with ESPN, or ABC on simulcast weeks.
How do I watch the ManningCast without cable?
The Peyton and Eli alternate broadcast airs on ESPN2 and in the ESPN app for selected games. Any plan that includes ESPN2, such as ESPN Unlimited or a live TV service with the ESPN networks, gives you access.
Can I watch Monday Night Football free on my phone?
Not on a regular basis. NFL+ has shown local and primetime games on phones and tablets for a fee, and ABC simulcasts are free over the air. Free trials from streaming services can cover a few weeks, but they convert to paid plans.
What internet speed do I need for MNF streaming?
Around 15 to 25 Mbps per stream is a comfortable target for HD sports. If several people stream at once, add that amount for each extra device.
