TiviMate Tips and Tricks: Best Settings and Shortcuts

These TiviMate tips and tricks are for people who already have the app running and want it faster, cleaner and easier to use. Below are our recommended TiviMate settings for channel switching, buffering, frame rate and guide updates, followed by tricks for groups, favorites, catch-up and the remote. Menu names shift a little between versions, so if a label differs, look for the closest match in Settings.

This page is about recommendations, not a feature manual. If you want every menu explained, read our TiviMate user guide. If you have not added a playlist yet, start with the TiviMate setup guide.

Recommended TiviMate settings at a glance

These are sensible starting points for most living-room setups. Change one thing at a time so you know what made the difference.

SettingOur starting pointWhy
Video decoderHardware (default)Lowest CPU load and fastest start on most devices
Buffer sizeLeave at default, raise one step only if streams stutterA bigger buffer smooths drops but adds delay when switching
Auto frame rate (AFR)On, if your TV handles it wellSmoother motion for sports and 50 fps channels
EPG updateOn app start plus a daily intervalKeeps the guide filled without constant downloads
Start on boot / last channelOnMakes the device feel like a cable box
Hidden groupsHide everything you never watchFaster scrolling and a cleaner guide

Tips for faster channel switching

  1. Hide unused groups. The single biggest speed win. Large playlists can have thousands of channels; hiding groups you never open makes the channel list and guide much lighter on budget sticks.
  2. Keep the buffer modest. A large buffer means TiviMate waits for more data before showing the picture. If your connection is stable, the default is usually the faster choice.
  3. Stick with hardware decoding. Software decoding is a fix for the odd channel that shows a black screen, not a speed setting.
  4. Use a wired connection or 5 GHz Wi-Fi. Faster delivery from the server matters more than any app setting. Our guide on how IPTV streams work and why they buffer explains the network side.
  5. Prefer Xtream Codes over M3U where your provider offers both. It is generally quicker to refresh and keeps the guide and catch-up data in sync.

Tips for smoother playback

  • Turn on AFR in TiviMate and on the device. Auto frame rate only works if the device’s own match-frame-rate option is also enabled. Expect a short blank flash when the TV switches modes.
  • Raise the buffer by one step, not five. If a channel stutters at peak times, increase the buffer gradually and test again. Going straight to the maximum makes every channel slower to start.
  • Enable audio passthrough only if you have a receiver or soundbar that decodes surround sound. Otherwise leave it off to avoid silent channels.
  • Test a problem channel in another player. If it also fails in VLC, the issue is the stream, not your TiviMate settings.

Tips for a better TV guide

  • Set a sensible EPG update interval. Updating on app start plus once a day is plenty for most people. Constant updates waste bandwidth and can slow cheaper devices.
  • Fix time offsets in one place. If every program is shifted by an hour, adjust the EPG time shift rather than changing your device clock.
  • Map stubborn channels manually. When one channel has no listings, open its channel settings and assign the right guide entry by hand.
  • Add a second EPG source only if needed. Extra sources fill gaps but make updates longer.

Tricks for groups and favorites

  1. Make favorites your home screen. Add your daily channels, reorder them, and set TiviMate to open on that group so you skip the full list.
  2. Build a “Game day” favorites list. Where your version supports several favorite lists, keep sports channels in their own list for quick access on match days.
  3. Rename and reorder groups. Put locals, news and sports at the top so they are a single press away.
  4. Hide adult and late-night groups as well as locking them. A locked group still shows in the list; a hidden one does not.
  5. Back up after tidying. Save a backup file once your groups and favorites are right, so a reinstall does not cost you an evening.

Catch-up and remote shortcuts

Catch-up only works on channels where your provider stores past programs, but when it does, these habits help:

  • Jump back from the guide. Press Left in the guide grid to scroll into past programs and select one to play from the start.
  • Restart a show in progress. On catch-up channels, the program options usually include playing from the beginning, which is handy when you tune in late.
  • Long-press Select for channel options. It is the fastest way to add a favorite, hide a channel or open its settings.
  • Use number keys if your remote has them. Turning on channel numbers in the interface settings makes direct entry practical.
  • Remap buttons you never use. TiviMate’s interface settings let you change what some remote buttons do, for example opening the guide or switching to the previous channel.

Recording and multi-view tricks need Premium, which you buy through the official TiviMate Companion app. Check the current price there. Avoid modded APKs that claim to unlock it for free.

Which tweaks should you start with?

If you only change three things, hide unused groups, set a once-a-day EPG update, and turn on AFR on both the app and the device. Those three fix most complaints about slow menus, empty guides and choppy sports.

No setting can fix a weak source, though. If you need a reliable service to pair with TiviMate, our plan, IPTV Journal, is a single 12-month option for $89 with an Xtream Codes login and EPG. You can see the plan details here. IPTV technology is legal, but only use services that hold the rights to their channels.

FAQ

What are the best TiviMate settings?

For most setups: hardware decoding, the default buffer size, AFR turned on in both TiviMate and the device, EPG updates on app start plus a daily interval, start on boot, and unused groups hidden. Adjust one setting at a time if something misbehaves.

How do I make TiviMate switch channels faster?

Hide groups you never watch, keep the buffer at or near default, use hardware decoding and connect over Ethernet or 5 GHz Wi-Fi. A lighter channel list and a fast connection make the biggest difference.

What buffer size should I use in TiviMate?

Start with the default. If streams stutter at busy times, raise it one step and test again. A larger buffer smooths out drops but makes channels take longer to start.

Should I turn on AFR in TiviMate?

Yes, if your TV switches modes reliably. It matches the display to the stream’s frame rate for smoother motion, especially in sports. Enable the match-frame-rate option in your device settings too.

How often should TiviMate update the EPG?

Once when the app starts and once a day is enough for most people. More frequent updates use extra bandwidth and can slow down budget streaming sticks.
