You can watch IPTV on Steam Deck because SteamOS is Linux under the hood. Switch to Desktop Mode, install a player like VLC or Kodi from the Discover store, add your M3U playlist, then add the player to Steam so it launches from Gaming Mode like a game. It takes about ten minutes, and it works on the handheld screen or docked to a TV.
What you need
- A Steam Deck (LCD or OLED) on Wi-Fi, or docked with Ethernet.
- Your IPTV details: an M3U playlist URL, or Xtream server, username and password, plus an EPG link if you want a guide.
- Optional but helpful: a Bluetooth or USB keyboard for typing long URLs. The on-screen keyboard works too.
Step 1: Switch to Desktop Mode
Press the Steam button, open Power, and choose Switch to Desktop. You land on a KDE Plasma desktop. To type anywhere in Desktop Mode, press Steam + X to bring up the on-screen keyboard.
Step 2: Pick and install a player from Discover
Open Discover, the shopping bag icon in the taskbar. It installs Flatpak apps from Flathub, which is the right way to add software on the Deck. SteamOS keeps its system files read-only, so Flatpaks also survive system updates.
| Player | Why choose it | Guide (EPG) |
|---|---|---|
| VLC | Opens an M3U link in seconds, easy to test | No |
| Kodi | Big-screen interface, controller friendly, full TV guide with PVR IPTV Simple Client | Yes |
| Open TV or yuki-iptv | Guide-style IPTV apps with Xtream login support | Varies |
Search for the app in Discover, select it and click Install. If you are unsure, install both VLC and Kodi: VLC to check your link works, Kodi for daily viewing. Since SteamOS is Linux, our guide to IPTV on Linux covers more players that also run on the Deck.
Step 3: Add your playlist
In VLC
- Open VLC and choose Media, Open Network Stream.
- Paste your M3U URL and click Play.
- Open the playlist view to switch between channels.
In Kodi
- Go to Settings, Add-ons, Install from repository, PVR clients and install PVR IPTV Simple Client if it is not already there.
- Open it under My add-ons, PVR clients and choose Configure.
- Enter your M3U URL and XMLTV EPG URL, then enable the add-on.
- Open TV from the Kodi home screen.
Our guide to Kodi for live TV goes deeper on guide and channel group settings.
Step 4: Add the player to Gaming Mode
- Still in Desktop Mode, open the Steam app.
- Click Add a Game in the bottom left, then Add a Non-Steam Game.
- Tick VLC, Kodi or both, and click Add Selected Programs.
- Double-click Return to Gaming Mode on the desktop.
- Find the player in your Library under the Non-Steam tab and press Play.
Controls that make it feel like a TV box
Kodi is the most comfortable in Gaming Mode because it is designed for remotes and gamepads. For VLC, open the controller settings for the non-Steam shortcut and pick a community layout, or map the trackpad to the mouse and a button to click. Spending two minutes on the layout makes channel surfing much easier.
Docked, battery and network tips
- Docked to a TV: set the output to 1080p or 4K in Display settings and use a wired connection through the dock for live sports. See 4K IPTV requirements for speed needs.
- On battery: lower the screen brightness and use hardware decoding in your player. Streaming video uses far less power than gaming.
- Buffering: Wi-Fi on a handheld moves around the house. Our guide on why IPTV streams buffer covers the usual fixes.
- Avoid system tweaks: you do not need to disable read-only mode for IPTV. Flatpaks from Discover are enough.
A quick legal note: IPTV as a technology is legal, but services that rebroadcast channels without licenses are not. Check what your provider has rights to and follow your local law. Player apps never include channels; they only play the playlist you load.
Fixing common Steam Deck IPTV problems
| Problem | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Player not in Gaming Mode library | It was not added as a non-Steam game | Repeat Step 4 in Desktop Mode, then check the Non-Steam tab |
| Controls do nothing in VLC | No controller layout for the shortcut | Pick a community layout or map the trackpad to the mouse |
| Channels load but no guide in Kodi | EPG URL missing or not refreshed | Add the XMLTV link in PVR IPTV Simple Client and restart Kodi |
| Stream stutters on the TV | Weak Wi-Fi while docked | Use Ethernet through the dock or move closer to the router |
| Keyboard does not appear | Desktop Mode shortcut not used | Press Steam + X to open the on-screen keyboard |
If a channel will not play in any player, test the same link on another device. When it fails everywhere, the problem is the stream or your subscription, not the Deck, and your provider’s support is the next stop.
Is the Steam Deck worth using for IPTV?
As a portable screen for live sports around the house, it is very good, and docked it can stand in for a streaming box. The main cost is the one-time setup in Desktop Mode. If you want a dedicated living room device instead, see our best streaming devices of 2026 roundup.
Need a subscription to load? Our own IPTV Journal plan is a single 12-month subscription for $89 (about $7.40 a month), with M3U and EPG links that work in VLC and Kodi on the Deck.
FAQ
Can I watch IPTV on Steam Deck without Desktop Mode?
You need Desktop Mode once to install the player and add it to Steam. After that, you launch it from Gaming Mode like any game.
Does IPTV Smarters or TiviMate work on Steam Deck?
Not natively. Both are built for Android and other platforms. On the Deck, use Linux players such as VLC, Kodi, Open TV or yuki-iptv instead.
Is Kodi or VLC better on Steam Deck?
Kodi is better for regular viewing because it has a TV guide and controller-friendly menus. VLC is quicker for testing a playlist or watching a single channel.
Will a SteamOS update remove my IPTV player?
Flatpak apps installed through Discover are kept across SteamOS updates. Apps installed by unlocking the read-only system can be wiped, which is why Discover is the better route.
