Amazon’s standalone Prime Video membership has historically been sold separately from full Prime. Before you rely on it for live NBA games, check on Amazon that live sports are included in the plan you choose. Prime Video shows ads by default, and Amazon sells an ad-free upgrade for an extra monthly fee.

Who is on Prime Video the most

Amazon’s national schedule leans on the league’s biggest draws. The Knicks, 76ers, Spurs and Lakers lead with ten Prime Video appearances each, and the Thunder have eight. That makes Prime especially useful for fans of those teams living outside their home markets, because those national games are not on League Pass live.

Prime’s schedule also runs into the playoffs. The Play-In Tournament in April is fully on Prime Video, so fans of teams finishing seventh through tenth in either conference need Prime to watch their team’s first postseason step. Amazon then has select first- and second-round games and its first exclusive Eastern Conference Finals.

How to watch on your TV

Prime Video has apps on Fire TV, Roku, Apple TV, Google TV, smart TVs from Samsung, LG and Vizio, game consoles and phones. Sign in with your Amazon account, and live games appear on the Prime Video home screen and in the sports section shortly before tip-off.

Tips for a smoother Prime Video game night

  • Use a wired or strong Wi-Fi connection. Live sports are less forgiving than movies, so a stable connection matters more than raw speed.
  • Find the game early. Live games show up in the Prime Video sports section and on the home screen shortly before tip-off.
  • Check the time zone. Doubleheaders have an early and a late game, so confirm the tip-off time in your own time zone.
  • Keep Prime active through April. If you only subscribe for parts of the season, remember that the NBA Cup knockouts are in December and the Play-In is in April.

NBA League Pass on Amazon

Amazon is the main third-party distributor of NBA League Pass, so you can add League Pass through Prime Video Channels to watch out-of-market games in the same app. League Pass is around $109.99 for the season, and Premium is about $159.99. Local games are blacked out on League Pass, and national games, including Amazon’s own, are available the morning after.

Is Prime enough for an NBA fan?

Prime alone covers about a quarter of the national regular-season schedule and the big December and April events. You will still miss Peacock’s Monday and Tuesday games, ESPN’s Wednesday games, Christmas Day on ABC and ESPN, and the NBA Finals on ABC. Read our guide to the NBA on Peacock for the other streaming-first partner, and our guide to the cheapest way to watch ESPN for the Wednesday and Christmas games.

Some fans look at IPTV subscriptions for wider coverage. IPTV is a legal technology, but only licensed services may carry NBA games, so check what any provider is authorized to show where you live.
