The quickest way to watch IPTV on Mac is VLC: open File, Open Network, paste your M3U URL and press Open. For a proper guide and favorites, use a dedicated player such as IPTVX, UHF or GSE Smart IPTV from the App Store, or Kodi with the PVR IPTV Simple Client. One detail matters more than any other on Mac: some of these App Store players only run on Macs with Apple silicon (M1 or later).
First, check which Mac you have
Click the Apple menu and choose About This Mac. If you see “Chip: Apple M1” or later, you have Apple silicon and can run iPhone and iPad apps that their developers allow on Mac. If you see an Intel processor, stick to native macOS apps like VLC and Kodi.
| App | Runs on Intel Mac | Runs on Apple silicon Mac | Guide (EPG) |
|---|---|---|---|
| VLC | Yes | Yes | No |
| Kodi + PVR IPTV Simple Client | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| IPTVX | No (developer lists Mac M1+) | Yes | Yes |
| UHF | No (iPad app on Mac) | Yes, macOS 13 or later | Yes |
| GSE Smart IPTV Player Live TV | No (iPad app on Mac) | Yes, macOS 13 or later | Yes |
Apps listed as “Designed for iPad” run on Apple silicon Macs, but the App Store may label them “Not verified for macOS.” In practice that means the interface is touch-first, so expect some layouts to feel like a big iPad.
Method 1: VLC (free, any Mac)
- Download VLC from the official VideoLAN website and drag it to Applications.
- Open VLC and choose File, Open Network.
- Paste your M3U URL and click Open.
- Open the playlist window (Window, Playlist) to switch channels.
VLC is ideal for testing a link and for watching one channel at a time, but it has no TV guide. More on that in how M3U links work.
Method 2: App Store IPTV players on Apple silicon
If your Mac has an M-series chip, App Store players give you a guide, favorites and catch-up menus.
- IPTVX: the developer supports iPhone, iPad, Apple TV and Mac (M1 or later), so you can use the same app across your Apple devices. It includes custom EPG assignment.
- UHF: supports M3U, Xtream, Plex, Jellyfin and Emby sources, with catch-up and a polished guide. It is free with an optional PRO plan (around $1.99 a month, $17.99 a year or $49.99 lifetime at the time of writing).
- GSE Smart IPTV Player Live TV: supports M3U and Xtream, free with premium tiers.
Setup is the same as on iPhone: add a source, pick Xtream or M3U, enter the details, then add your EPG link if needed. Our guide to IPTV on iPhone walks through those screens, and our general IPTV player setup guide covers the general process.
Method 3: Kodi for a TV-style setup
If your Mac is connected to a TV, or you like a lean-back interface, Kodi is the strongest free option.
- Download Kodi for macOS from kodi.tv and move it to Applications. The first time, you may need to right-click and choose Open to get past Gatekeeper.
- Go to Settings, Add-ons, Install from repository, PVR clients and install PVR IPTV Simple Client.
- Open it under My add-ons, choose Configure, and enter your M3U and XMLTV EPG URLs.
- Enable the add-on and open TV from the home screen.

Getting the most out of IPTV on a Mac
- AirPlay to Apple TV: from Control Center you can mirror or extend your display to an Apple TV, though a native Apple TV player is smoother. See best IPTV players for Apple TV.
- Use a second screen: drag the player to an external monitor and keep working on the main display.
- Wired is better: for live sports on a Mac mini or iMac, Ethernet beats Wi-Fi. Our guide on why IPTV streams buffer covers buffering.
- Keep links safe: your M3U URL contains your login, so do not save it in shared notes.
A quick legal note: IPTV as a technology is legal, but services that rebroadcast channels without licenses are not. Check what your provider has rights to and follow your local law. Player apps never include channels; they only play the playlist you load.
If an App Store player will not open on your Mac at all, check the listing for a minimum macOS version. Several iPad-based players need macOS 13 or later, so updating macOS is often the fix.
Which Mac IPTV option should you choose?
On an Intel Mac, use VLC for quick viewing and Kodi for a guide. On an Apple silicon Mac, IPTVX or UHF gives the most complete experience, and both also have iPhone and Apple TV versions if you watch on those too. Keep VLC installed either way as a quick troubleshooting tool.

FAQ
What is the best free IPTV player for Mac?
VLC and Kodi are both free. VLC is fastest for opening a playlist, while Kodi with PVR IPTV Simple Client adds a full TV guide.
Can I use iPhone IPTV apps on my Mac?
On Apple silicon Macs, yes, if the developer allows it. Apps like UHF and GSE Smart IPTV list Mac compatibility for M1 or later. Intel Macs cannot run iPhone or iPad apps.
Is there an IPTV Smarters app for Mac?
Availability of IPTV Smarters on macOS has changed over time, so check the developer’s site and the App Store. VLC, Kodi, IPTVX and UHF cover the same needs.
Why does VLC on Mac not show a TV guide?
VLC plays the streams in an M3U playlist but does not read EPG data. Use Kodi or an App Store IPTV player if you want a guide.
Can I AirPlay IPTV from my Mac to my TV?
Yes. Use Screen Mirroring in Control Center to send your display to an Apple TV or AirPlay-compatible TV. A native player on the TV device usually gives better quality.
