How you watch IPTV on Chromecast depends on which Chromecast you own. A Chromecast with Google TV has its own remote, home screen and Google Play Store, so you install an IPTV player directly on it, just like on an Android TV box. An older Chromecast (the round dongles without a remote, including Chromecast Ultra) has no apps of its own, so you play IPTV on your phone or computer and cast it to the TV. This guide covers both, plus what to do if you are buying something new.
Step 1: Identify your Chromecast
| Model | Has a remote and home screen? | How IPTV works | Status |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chromecast with Google TV (4K or HD) | Yes | Install a player from Google Play | No longer sold by Google since early 2025, still supported |
| Chromecast 1st to 3rd gen, Chromecast Ultra | No | Cast from a phone, tablet or computer | Discontinued |
| Google TV Streamer | Yes | Install a player from Google Play | Current Google device |
If you get a TV-style home screen and a small remote in the box, you have the Google TV version. If the dongle only shows a backdrop until you cast something from your phone, it is a cast-only model.
Method 1: Chromecast with Google TV
This is the better experience by far. You get a full program guide and the TV remote controls everything.
Install a player
- On the home screen, go to Apps or use search, and type the player name.
- Install from the Google Play listing. Popular options include TiviMate (grid guide, built for Android TV), IPTV Smarters Pro and VLC for testing.
- Check the developer name before installing; lookalike apps exist.
All of these are players only. None include channels; you add a subscription from your provider. Our IPTV player rankings compare features.
Add your login
- Open the player and choose Xtream Codes (server, username, password) or M3U playlist (one URL).
- Use the player’s web or QR entry if it has one, or the Google TV app on your phone as a keyboard, to avoid typing long URLs.
- Add the EPG link if you used M3U and your provider gave you one.
Make it run well on limited hardware
The Chromecast with Google TV has 2 GB of RAM and 8 GB of storage (4K model), and storage runs out quickly. Keep it smooth with these habits:
- Uninstall apps you do not use and clear the player’s cache under Settings, Apps.
- Hide channel groups you never watch and limit the guide to a few days.
- Use 5 GHz Wi-Fi, or add a USB-C power adapter with an Ethernet port for wired networking.
- Restart occasionally from Settings, System, Restart.
Method 2: Cast-only Chromecasts
Older Chromecasts cannot run apps, so the IPTV player runs on your phone, tablet or computer, and the Chromecast simply displays the stream.
From an Android phone or iPhone
- Install an IPTV player with cast support on your phone. Many mobile players show a cast icon in the video controls; check the app description before you pay for anything.
- Add your Xtream login or M3U link in the phone app.
- Make sure the phone and Chromecast are on the same Wi-Fi network.
- Start a channel and tap the cast icon, then choose your Chromecast.
When an app casts properly (rather than mirroring), the Chromecast fetches the stream itself, so you can use your phone for other things while it plays.
From a computer
If your IPTV player runs in a desktop app or browser, Google Chrome can cast a tab or the whole screen. Click the three-dot menu in Chrome and choose Cast. This is mirroring rather than true casting, so quality and smoothness depend on your computer and Wi-Fi.
Why some channels will not cast
Casting works only with stream formats the Chromecast supports. Some IPTV streams use formats or containers that a Chromecast cannot play directly, in which case you see a spinner or an error. Try another channel, switch the player’s stream format setting (HLS versus MPEG-TS) if available, or use screen mirroring as a fallback. If many channels fail, a device that runs the player itself is the real fix.
Performance tips for any Chromecast
- Put the router close or use a mesh node in the TV room; Chromecasts rely on Wi-Fi unless you add an adapter.
- Prefer casting over mirroring. Casting hands the stream to the Chromecast; mirroring re-encodes your screen and adds lag.
- Pick HD channels on older and HD models; they cannot show 4K anyway.
- Restart both devices if casting stops showing up as an option.

Buying new? Skip the Chromecast
Google stopped selling the Chromecast with Google TV in early 2025 and replaced it with the Google TV Streamer, which has 4 GB of RAM, 32 GB of storage and a built-in Ethernet port. Our IPTV on Google TV Streamer guide covers it step by step. A Fire OS stick such as the Fire TV Stick 4K Max is another option; see our best streaming device guide for alternatives.
Which method should you choose?
If you have a Chromecast with Google TV, install a player on it; it gives you a proper guide and remote control. If you have an older cast-only model, casting from a phone works for occasional viewing, but for daily IPTV a device that runs apps itself will be far less frustrating.
For a subscription that works with these players, our own plan is 12 months for $89 with 20,000+ live channels and 24/7 help: see the IPTV Journal plan details. IPTV technology is legal; make sure any provider you use is licensed for the channels it streams.
FAQ
Can I install TiviMate on a Chromecast?
Only on a Chromecast with Google TV, which has Google Play. Older cast-only Chromecasts cannot install apps, so TiviMate will not run on them.
Is the Chromecast with Google TV still supported?
Google stopped selling it on its store in early 2025 but said it would keep supporting existing devices with updates. It still runs IPTV players from Google Play.
Why does my IPTV app not show the cast icon?
The app may not support casting, or your phone and Chromecast may be on different networks. Check the app’s description for Chromecast support and connect both devices to the same Wi-Fi.
Is casting or mirroring better for IPTV?
Casting is better. The Chromecast pulls the stream directly, so playback is smoother and your phone stays free. Mirroring copies your screen, which adds lag and drains the battery.
Do I need a VPN to cast IPTV to Chromecast?
No. A VPN is a privacy tool and is not needed to cast a legitimate stream, and it should not be used to bypass regional rights. VPN apps on a phone can also stop casting from finding the Chromecast on your local network.
