When it comes to Virgin Media vs Sky TV, the deciding factor is usually broadband. Virgin Media sells TV as an add-on to its own broadband network, so you need to be in a Virgin area, while Sky’s streaming TV works over almost any decent UK connection. After that, it comes down to sport, recording and how long you are willing to sign up for.
Here is a practical comparison of what each provider offers in 2026.
US, UK, Canadian and international TV in one app
20,000+ live channels from home and abroad, on every device. Plans from $40.
How the two services work
Virgin Media runs its own cable and full fibre network. Its TV packages are added on top of Virgin broadband, and you choose between a traditional box that records live TV and a smaller streaming box.
Sky now sells TV mainly as Sky Stream (a small puck) or Sky Glass (a TV with Sky built in). Both run over broadband, which can come from Sky or, in most cases, another provider. Sky Q, the satellite box, is no longer sold online to new customers.
Package prices compared
Prices below are new-customer prices at the time of writing, taken from Sky’s shop and from a June 2026 comparison of Virgin’s TV packages. Both providers change offers frequently, so treat these as a guide and check the current deal.
| Package type | Virgin Media (TV added to broadband, 18 months) | Sky Stream (24 months) |
|---|---|---|
| Entry TV | Maxit TV, around £25 a month, includes Netflix Standard | Essential TV, £15 a month, includes Netflix Standard with Ads |
| Bigger entertainment | Bigger TV, around £35 a month, includes Netflix and Disney+ | Ultimate TV, around £24 a month |
| Add movies | Bigger TV + Movies, around £45 a month | Sky Cinema, £14 a month extra |
| Add sport | Bigger TV + Sports, around £50 a month, with Sky Sports and TNT Sports | Sky Sports, £33 a month extra; TNT Sports, £34 a month extra |
Remember that Virgin’s TV price sits on top of its broadband bill, while Sky’s TV price can be paired with broadband from Sky or elsewhere. Compare the total monthly cost, not just the TV line.
Sport: who gives you more?
Both carry Sky Sports and TNT Sports. Virgin’s Bigger TV + Sports bundle includes both together, which can work out well if you want every Premier League broadcaster in one bill.
On Sky, you add Sky Sports and TNT Sports as separate extras, which gives you more control. Dropping TNT in the summer, for example, is easier when it is a separate add-on on a 31-day term. If sport is your main reason to pay, also look at our breakdown of IPTV sports packages to see how other options compare.
Recording and equipment
This is one of the clearest differences:
- Virgin Media’s V6 box has a 1TB hard drive and six tuners, so you can record several channels at once and keep recordings.
- Virgin’s Stream box is app-based and does not record live TV.
- Sky Stream and Sky Glass do not record. They use a Playlist that saves shows from Sky’s on-demand library.
If you still like to record live TV and keep it, Virgin’s V6 is now one of the few mainstream options that does this.
Contracts and flexibility
Virgin Media TV is usually sold on an 18-month contract alongside broadband. Sky Stream is offered on a 24-month term or a 31-day rolling plan for a few pounds more each month.
That rolling option is a real point in Sky’s favour if you might move house, switch broadband or want to cut back later. Sky still asks for 31 days’ notice to cancel a rolling plan.
Broadband: the hidden deciding factor
If you are not in a Virgin Media area, the decision is made for you. If you are, Virgin’s cable and full fibre connections are generally fast enough for 4K streaming.

Sky’s streaming TV needs a solid connection too: Sky asks for at least 30Mb/s for its Ultra HD pack, plus roughly 5Mb/s for each extra puck. Our guide to troubleshooting your streaming connection helps if picture quality drops at busy times.
Some households also run an IPTV app alongside their main provider for international channels. Our own plan, IPTV Journal, is $89 for 12 months (billed in US dollars); whatever you use, pick a provider that holds the rights to what it shows.
Customer experience and moving home
Both providers handle moves differently. Because Virgin Media depends on its own network, moving to an address outside its footprint can leave you unable to take the service with you, so check availability before you sign an 18-month deal. Sky’s streaming TV only needs a decent broadband line, which makes it easier to take Sky with you to most UK addresses.
Both providers raise prices from time to time. Since early 2025, Ofcom rules require mid-contract price rises to be set out in pounds and pence when you sign up, so read that section of the contract summary before agreeing.
Which should you choose?
- Choose Virgin Media if you are in its network area, want one bill for fast broadband and TV, and still want to record live TV on a box.
- Choose Sky if you want flexible 31-day plans, want to keep your current broadband provider, or prefer adding and removing sport and movies month by month.
- Compare total cost over the full contract, including what happens to the price when the deal ends.
FAQ
Is Virgin Media cheaper than Sky TV?
It depends on the bundle. Sky’s entry TV price is lower, but Virgin’s sports bundle includes both Sky Sports and TNT Sports in one package. Always compare the full monthly cost including broadband over the whole contract.
Can I get Sky channels on Virgin Media?
Yes. Virgin Media carries Sky channels such as Sky Atlantic, and its higher bundles add Sky Cinema or Sky Sports. Exact channels vary by package, so check the line-up before you sign.
Do I need Virgin broadband to get Virgin TV?
Virgin sells its TV packages as an add-on to its broadband, so in practice you need a Virgin Media connection. Check availability at your address first.
Can I record on Sky Stream like on Virgin’s V6 box?
No. Sky Stream uses a Playlist that saves shows from on-demand, while Virgin’s V6 records live TV to a 1TB hard drive with six tuners.
Which is better for 4K?
Both offer 4K content on supported packages and equipment. On Sky, 4K needs the Ultra HD and Dolby Atmos pack and broadband of at least 30Mb/s, according to Sky.
