Sky Stream vs Sky Q: Which Sky Box Should You Have?

In the Sky Stream vs Sky Q debate, the short answer is this: Sky Q is the older satellite box with a hard drive that records live TV, while Sky Stream is a small streaming puck that runs over your broadband, needs no dish and does not record at all. New customers can no longer buy Sky Q online, so for most people the real question is whether to stay on Sky Q or move across to Stream.

This guide compares the two on hardware, recordings, picture quality, contracts and prices so you can make that call with confidence.

The hardware: dish and box vs puck

Sky Q is a set-top box that takes its signal from a satellite dish. You need an engineer to install it, and your home must be able to take a dish, which rules out some flats and listed buildings.

Sky Stream is a palm-sized puck that connects to your TV by HDMI and streams every channel over the internet. There is no dish, no engineer and no satellite cable. If your broadband is reliable, setting it up is about as hard as plugging in a games console.

The trade-off is that Stream is only as good as your connection. Sky says its Ultra HD and Dolby Atmos pack needs broadband of at least 30Mb/s, and each extra Stream puck in the house needs roughly another 5Mb/s. If your line struggles, our guide to why streams buffer and how to fix it covers the usual culprits.

Recording: the biggest practical difference

This is where most Sky Q owners hesitate. Sky Q records live TV to a built-in hard drive, and your recordings stay there until you delete them.

Sky Stream has no recording function. Instead, you add shows to your Playlist, which pulls them from Sky’s on-demand library. That works well for most Sky Originals and big series, but anything outside the on-demand rights can disappear from your Playlist, and a handful of live events are not available to save at all.

One more point: Sky states that recordings on Sky Q or Sky+ will not transfer to Stream or Sky Glass. If you have years of saved films and episodes, watch or note them before you switch.

Channels, picture and sound

Both boxes deliver the main Sky packages, Sky Sports, Sky Cinema and the big apps such as Netflix. Stream has historically carried fewer of the niche channels you find on satellite, such as some shopping, religious, international and music channels, so check the channel list if you rely on any of those.

Both support 4K on compatible packages. Live TV on Stream can run a few seconds behind satellite, which only really matters if you watch big football matches while friends text you the goals.

Prices and contracts in 2026

Sky Q is no longer sold online to new customers, so the prices below are for Sky Stream, taken from Sky’s shop at the time of writing. They change often, so check sky.com before you sign.

The 31-day rolling option is a genuine advantage of Stream. Sky Q always tied you into a minimum term, while Stream lets you pay a little more each month in exchange for being able to leave. If you are thinking about leaving altogether, read our step-by-step guide on cutting the cord.

Who should stay on Sky Q?

Sky Q still makes sense if:

  • Your broadband is slow or unreliable, especially below 30Mb/s
  • You record a lot of live TV and keep recordings for months
  • You watch channels that are not on Stream
  • You are mid-contract and happy with what you have

Who should switch to Sky Stream?

Stream is the better fit if:

  • You cannot have a dish, or you want rid of one
  • You want the flexibility of a 31-day rolling contract
  • Your broadband is fast and stable, ideally full fibre
  • You mostly watch box sets and apps rather than recording live TV

If you also want a wider international line-up alongside Sky, some households add an IPTV service. Our own plan, IPTV Journal, is $89 for 12 months (billed in US dollars). Whatever you choose, make sure any service you pay for holds the rights to the channels it carries; our UK IPTV guide explains what to look for.

Our verdict: which should you choose?

If you are already on Sky Q and it works, there is no rush to move, but you will eventually be steered towards Stream or Sky Glass because Q is no longer on sale online. If you are new to Sky, Stream is effectively the default choice, and it is a good one as long as your broadband is up to the job. Test your speed at peak times, think honestly about how much you rely on recordings, and choose the 31-day option if you are unsure.

FAQ

Can I still buy Sky Q in 2026?

Sky’s shop says Sky Q is no longer available to buy online and points new customers to Sky Stream or Sky Glass. Existing Sky Q customers can keep their service, and it is worth asking Sky directly if you have a specific reason to need satellite.

Does Sky Stream need a satellite dish?

No. Sky Stream delivers every channel over your broadband connection, so you only need the puck, a TV with HDMI and a stable internet connection. That makes it a good option for flats where a dish is not allowed.

Can I record on Sky Stream?

Not in the traditional sense. Sky Stream uses a cloud-style Playlist that saves shows from Sky’s on-demand library, so there is no hard drive and some programmes may not be available to save.

Will my Sky Q recordings move to Sky Stream?

No. Sky says recordings on Sky Q or Sky+ do not transfer to Stream or Sky Glass. Watch anything important before your Sky Q box is collected or returned.

What broadband speed does Sky Stream need?

Sky lists 30Mb/s as the minimum for its Ultra HD and Dolby Atmos pack, plus about 5Mb/s for each extra puck. HD viewing needs less, but a stable connection matters more than the headline number.
