The good news about how to watch PBS without cable is that most of it is free. Your local PBS station broadcasts over the air for anyone with an antenna, and the free PBS app and PBS.org stream your local station live if you live in its coverage area. A donation of around $5 a month to your station unlocks PBS Passport, a much larger on-demand library.
Unlike commercial networks, PBS is built around local member stations, and that shapes every option below. Here is what each one gives you and how to set it up.
PBS options at a glance
| Option | Cost | What you get |
|---|---|---|
| HD antenna | One-time, around $20 to $100 | Your local PBS station(s) live, often with extra subchannels such as PBS Kids or Create |
| PBS.org livestream | Free, no account needed | Your local station live in a web browser, if you live in its area |
| PBS app | Free, PBS account sign-in | Local livestream plus free episodes on Roku, Fire TV, Apple TV, Google TV, Samsung, Vizio and phones |
| PBS Passport | Donation from around $5/mo or $60/yr | Extended on-demand library of PBS shows through your local station |
| PBS KIDS Video app | Free | Kids’ shows and a live PBS KIDS stream |
| YouTube TV | Around $82.99/mo | Local PBS station live in many markets, alongside cable channels |
Option 1: watch PBS free over the air
An antenna is the most reliable way to watch PBS live. Many PBS stations broadcast several subchannels, so one scan can add the main station plus channels like PBS Kids, Create or World, depending on your area.
- Find your nearest PBS transmitter with the FCC’s reception maps or your station’s website.
- Pick an antenna rated for that distance. Our guide to the best TV antennas for local channels covers indoor and outdoor models.
- Plug it into the TV’s antenna input and run a full channel scan.
- If reception is patchy, move the antenna higher or closer to a window facing the tower, then scan again.
Option 2: the free PBS livestream
PBS lets local stations stream their broadcast online at no charge. On PBS.org you can watch in a browser without an account or donation. In the PBS app on TVs and streaming devices, you need a free PBS account, or a Google, Apple or Facebook sign-in.
The key limit, according to PBS’s help pages: you must currently live in a PBS station’s area to watch its livestream. If you are traveling, the stream you see may change or may not be available.
- Supported devices: Roku, Amazon Fire TV, Apple TV, Google TV and Android TV, Chromecast, Samsung smart TVs from 2017 on, Vizio SmartCast TVs, iPhone, iPad and Android.
- Free on-demand episodes: recent episodes of many shows are free for a limited time in the app.
Option 3: PBS Passport for the full library
PBS Passport is a member benefit from your local station, not a separate streaming service. PBS lists the qualifying gift as $5 a month or $60 or more a year. In return you get extended access to a large library of PBS programming on demand, including past seasons of many shows.
Because it is a donation, part of it may be tax deductible. Your station’s website explains the details for your area. Passport does not change the livestream, which stays free.
Option 4: live TV services
PBS is less common on streaming bundles than other networks. YouTube TV carries local PBS stations in many markets, which is handy if you already pay for it and want PBS in the same guide and DVR. For other services, check the channel lookup for your ZIP code before assuming PBS is included.
Sling, FOX One, Paramount+ and Peacock are not ways to watch PBS.
Common PBS streaming problems
- Wrong station or no livestream: the livestream follows your location. Check that location services are on, or pick your home station in the app’s settings.
- Passport videos locked: sign in with the same email you used for your station donation, then activate Passport from your station’s link or the app’s account page.
- Livestream missing for some shows: stations occasionally block programs they do not have streaming rights for. The antenna broadcast is unaffected.
- App feels slow on an older TV: update the app or move to a newer streaming device.
Kids and PBS
For families, the free PBS KIDS Video app is often the most used PBS app in the house. It needs no account, includes a live PBS KIDS stream and on-demand episodes, and runs on the major streaming platforms, tablets and phones.
Device tips
- If your TV’s built-in PBS app is old or missing, a modern streaming stick is the easiest fix. See our picks for the best streaming device for a non-smart TV.
- Signing in with the same PBS account on every device keeps your watch list and Passport access in sync.
- To activate Passport on a TV, sign in to the app, then link your station membership when prompted.
PBS is a good reminder that legal TV can be cheap. IPTV technology itself is legal, but services selling channels without licenses are not, so check rights before buying any package. If you also want a large paid lineup, our plan, IPTV Journal, is $89 for 12 months.
