The Google TV Streamer is one of the easiest devices for IPTV because the best-known players, including TiviMate, are available directly in the Google Play Store, with no sideloading needed. To watch IPTV on Google TV Streamer, you install a player from Google Play, enter the M3U link or Xtream Codes login from your provider, and connect the box with Ethernet if you can. This guide walks through each step and the settings that matter on this device.
The Streamer is Google’s replacement for the Chromecast with Google TV, which Google stopped selling in early 2025. If you still own one of those, the same players and steps below apply to it, with less memory and storage to work with.
Why the Google TV Streamer suits IPTV
The Streamer launched in September 2024 at $99.99 and runs Google TV on Android TV OS. Its hardware fixes the two complaints people had with the old Chromecast: not enough memory and storage, and no built-in wired networking.
| Spec | Google TV Streamer | What it means for IPTV |
|---|---|---|
| RAM | 4 GB | Large playlists and guides load and scroll smoothly |
| Storage | 32 GB | Room for several players, guide cache and other apps |
| Networking | Gigabit Ethernet, Wi-Fi 5 | Wired connection for stable live sports |
| App store | Google Play | TiviMate and other full players install officially |
| Extras | Thread border router, Matter hub | Not IPTV related, but useful for smart homes |
It is a set-top box rather than a stick, so it sits next to the TV and connects with an HDMI cable.
Step 1: Choose a player from Google Play
An IPTV player is only a player. None of these apps contain channels; you load your own subscription into them. On the Streamer, these are popular choices:
- TiviMate IPTV Player: designed for Android TV, with a cable-style grid guide. The free version covers basics; Premium adds features such as recording and multiple playlists.
- IPTV Smarters Pro: a straightforward layout with separate Live TV, Movies and Series sections. Check the Play Store listing on your device, as availability of specific versions changes.
- VLC: free and good for testing whether a link works, but it has no proper program guide.

Step 2: Install and log in
- On the home screen, go to Apps or use the search bar and type the player’s name.
- Open the Google Play listing, confirm the developer name, and select Install. TiviMate’s developer is listed as Armobsoft FZE.
- Open the app. Choose Xtream Codes if your provider gave you a server, username and password, or M3U playlist if you have a single URL.
- If the app offers it, enter the details from your phone or computer through the web page or QR code shown on screen. It is far quicker than the on-screen keyboard. The Google TV app on your phone can also act as a keyboard.
- Add the EPG (XMLTV) link if you used M3U and your provider supplied one, then wait for the guide to load.
Xtream logins are simpler because the guide, movies and series usually come through automatically. Our IPTV player app setup guide shows where these options live in each app.
What about sideloading on Google TV?
You rarely need it on the Streamer because the main players are on Google Play. If an app your provider recommends is not listed, check the developer’s official site first. Google TV does allow installing apps from unknown sources after you unlock developer options (click the Android TV OS build number seven times under Settings, System, About), but only install files from the developer’s official source.
Google has also announced developer verification rules for Android apps, including those installed outside Google Play. The rollout is planned to start in a few countries in 2026 before expanding globally in 2027, with a separate route for advanced users. Sticking with Play Store apps keeps you clear of those changes.
Step 3: Tune the Streamer for live TV
Plug in Ethernet
The Ethernet port is the Streamer’s biggest advantage for IPTV. A wired connection removes most Wi-Fi interference and is the best fix for buffering during live sports. If the router is in another room, a powerline adapter or a mesh node with an Ethernet port is often enough.
Match frame rate and content
Go to Settings > Display & Sound > Advanced display settings and look for the match content or frame rate options. Turning them on lets the box switch to the channel’s native frame rate, which makes sports look smoother. Then check your player’s own settings for an “AFR” (auto frame rate) option.
Keep the home screen light
Google TV’s recommendations pull data in the background. If menus feel slow, uninstall apps you do not use and clear the player’s cache under Settings > Apps.
Trim the playlist
Hiding channel groups you never watch makes the guide faster to load. Set the EPG to refresh once a day.
Getting the most from 4K
The Streamer outputs 4K with HDR and Dolby Vision, but a 4K picture also needs a 4K channel from your provider and enough bandwidth. Our page on 4K IPTV requirements explains the network and HDMI side. Many IPTV channels are HD, so the Streamer’s job for those is simply to play them cleanly.
Is the Google TV Streamer the right IPTV box for you?
If you want an easy, officially supported setup with a full grid guide, it is one of the best choices: Google Play apps, plenty of memory and Ethernet built in. If you want to spend less, a Fire OS stick works too, but you will be sideloading and you need to check the model. If you are a heavy user who wants USB storage for recordings and maximum power, the NVIDIA Shield TV Pro is the step up.
For a subscription to load into your player, our own plan is 12 months for $89 with 20,000+ live channels and 24/7 support: see the IPTV Journal pricing section. IPTV technology is legal, but always choose a provider that holds the rights to what it streams.
FAQ
Is TiviMate available on the Google TV Streamer?
Yes. TiviMate is listed on Google Play for Android TV devices, so you can install it on the Streamer without sideloading. The free version has basic features, and Premium is an optional paid upgrade.
Does the Google TV Streamer come with IPTV channels?
No. Google TV includes free channels from Google and lets you install official streaming apps, but IPTV players are empty until you add an M3U link or Xtream login from a provider you subscribe to.
Should I use Wi-Fi or Ethernet for IPTV on the Streamer?
Ethernet whenever possible. The Streamer has a gigabit port, and a wired connection is the most reliable way to avoid buffering during live events. On Wi-Fi, keep it on the 5 GHz band.
Can I still buy a Chromecast with Google TV?
Google stopped selling it on the Google Store in February 2025 and positioned the Google TV Streamer as its replacement. Some retailers may still have leftover stock, and Google said it would keep supporting existing units.
Will Google’s new sideloading rules affect IPTV on the Streamer?
If you install your player from Google Play, the verification rules for apps outside the store should not affect you. They mainly apply to apps installed from files, and Google has said advanced users will still have a way to install unverified apps.
