IPTV Recording and DVR: How to Record Live TV That Works

IPTV recording means saving a live channel to storage so you can watch it later, the same job a cable DVR does. With IPTV the recording is done either by your player app, which writes the stream to your device, a USB drive or a network folder, or by a service with a built-in cloud DVR. Which one you can use depends on your app, your device and what your provider allows.

This guide explains both approaches, shows how to set up recording in the apps people use most, and gives a quick diagnosis for recordings that fail, cut off early or play back choppy.

At the time of writing, YouTube TV and Hulu + Live TV advertise unlimited cloud DVR with recordings kept for around nine months, and Sling TV includes a limited number of DVR hours with an optional paid unlimited upgrade. Plans change, so check the current terms. Our overview of US live TV options with locals, sports and DVR compares these in more depth.

How to record IPTV in TiviMate

TiviMate is a player only; it ships no channels. Recording, including scheduled recording, is part of TiviMate Premium.

  1. Plug in a USB drive or set up a network folder if your stick has little free space. On most Fire TV and Android TV devices a USB OTG adapter is needed for a USB drive.
  2. Open TiviMate settings and find the recording options. Choose where recordings are saved (internal storage, USB or a network share).
  3. To record now, open the channel menu while watching and choose Record.
  4. To schedule, open the TV guide, select a future program and choose to record it. You can usually add a few minutes of padding before and after.
  5. Find finished recordings in the Recordings section of the app.

Check how many connections your plan allows. Recording one channel while watching another uses two streams at the same time. If your plan only allows one, the recording or the live stream will be cut. Our TiviMate guide covers the rest of the app’s setup.

Recording with IPTV Smarters Pro and VLC

IPTV Smarters Pro

Recording support in Smarters depends on the version and platform. Some builds show a record option in the live player; others do not. If you do not see one, use its Catch Up section instead, which plays past shows from your provider’s archive without saving a file. Our article on how IPTV catch-up works explains the difference.

VLC on a computer

  1. Open your stream in VLC (Media, then Open Network Stream).
  2. Turn on advanced controls (View, then Advanced Controls) to show the red Record button.
  3. Press Record to start and again to stop. VLC saves the file to its default recordings folder (usually your Videos folder), which you can change in its preferences.
  4. VLC has no scheduler or TV guide, so this suits one-off recordings rather than a DVR routine.

How much storage do you need?

File size depends on the stream’s bitrate, which varies by provider and quality. A simple formula: bitrate in megabits per second multiplied by 450 gives megabytes per hour. For example, a 5 Mbps stream works out to roughly 2.25 GB per hour. A 4K stream is much larger. Check the actual size of your first recording and plan from there.

  • Fire TV sticks have limited internal storage, so use USB or a network folder for anything regular.
  • Format USB drives as the app or device recommends, and use a drive with its own power if it is a hard disk.
  • Delete watched recordings; a full drive is an easy-to-miss reason scheduled recordings fail.

  1. Confirm the device stays awake. On Fire TV, sleep settings can interrupt background tasks.
  2. Use a wired connection if you can. Our IPTV troubleshooting guide covers network checks.
  3. Make sure the guide is accurate, since scheduled recordings follow it. A one-hour EPG shift means you record the wrong show.
  4. Record a short test of five minutes to confirm the save location works before scheduling a big event.

Recording and the law

Recording TV for personal, later viewing is a long-standing feature of DVRs. What matters is that the service you record from is licensed to carry those channels and that you follow its terms, which may restrict recording on some content. Do not share or redistribute recordings. Check your local rules if you are unsure.

Which setup should you choose?

If you want hands-off recording with no hardware, a licensed live TV service with a cloud DVR is the simplest choice. If you already use an IPTV subscription with a player like TiviMate, local recording to USB or a NAS gives you full control, as long as your plan allows enough connections. Our own IPTV Journal plan is $89 for 12 months and works with TiviMate and other major players; see the IPTV Journal pricing section for what is included.

FAQ

Can you record IPTV?

Yes, if your player app supports recording or your service includes a cloud DVR. TiviMate Premium can record to local storage, USB or a network folder, and VLC can record manually on a computer.

Does recording IPTV use an extra connection?

Usually yes. A local recording opens its own stream, so recording one channel while watching another needs two simultaneous connections on your plan.

Why did my IPTV recording stop early?

The most common causes are a full drive, a dropped connection, the device going to sleep, or guide times that are off. Free up space, use a stable connection and add end padding.

Is catch-up better than recording?

Catch-up needs no storage and lets you watch any recent show on archive channels, but only for the days your provider keeps. Recording is better for keeping shows longer or for channels without archive.

How much space does an hour of IPTV take?

It depends on bitrate. A 5 Mbps HD stream is roughly 2.25 GB per hour, while 4K takes much more. Check your first recording’s size to plan storage.
