The best IPTV player app for a phone or tablet is iMPlayer on iPhone and iPad, and Televizo on Android phones and tablets. Both are built for touch screens, read M3U playlists and Xtream Codes logins, and show a proper TV guide. VLC is the free backup on every platform, while TiviMate, the favorite on TV boxes, is the wrong pick for a phone.
This guide looks only at handheld devices. If you want a ranking that covers TVs, streaming sticks and computers too, see our best IPTV player ranking by device.
Why phone and tablet players are different
A player that feels great with a TV remote can be awkward on a 6-inch touch screen. On a phone you want large tap targets, a guide you can swipe, picture-in-picture so you can keep a game running while you reply to messages, and casting to a TV when you get home.
TiviMate is the clearest example. Its Google Play listing says it is designed for Android TV and is not optimized for touch devices, so it is not a good choice for a phone even though it is one of the best TV players around.
Remember too that every app below is a player only. None of them includes channels. You add a playlist or login from a service you subscribe to.

Prices and requirements below were checked on the official store listings at the time of writing and can change.
Best for iPhone and iPad: iMPlayer
iMPlayer, from developer HzApps, is in the App Store for iPhone, iPad, Apple TV and Apple silicon Macs. The listing requires iOS 18, iPadOS 18 or tvOS 18 or later, so check your software version first.
It accepts M3U playlists and Xtream style logins, supports external EPG links, catch-up, VOD and local timeshift, and offers MultiView on iPad. The premium tier was listed at around $24.99 in the US store at the time of writing.
The big advantage is consistency. If your household also has an Apple TV, you get the same interface on the big screen and on your phone.
Best for Android phones and tablets: Televizo
Televizo describes itself on Google Play as a player for “your phone, tablet, or TV,” which is exactly what you want on a handheld. It handles multiple playlists, an electronic program guide and catch-up, and it was updated in 2026.
The free version contains ads and offers in-app purchases to remove limits. Recording is not listed in its description, so it is a viewing app first. For most people who watch the news or a match on a phone, that is enough.
iMPlayer also has an Android mobile app from the same developer if you want the same look on Android and Apple devices.
Budget iPhone pick: Smarters Player Lite
The developer behind IPTV Smarters, WHMCS Smarters, publishes Smarters Player Lite in the App Store for iPhone, iPad and Apple TV. It is free with a premium upgrade listed at $1.99 at the time of writing, and it supports M3U playlists and an integrated EPG.
The original IPTV Smarters Pro is not in Google Play, so on Android you would have to install it from the developer’s website. Our guide to downloading IPTV Smarters Pro safely explains which version to use on each device, and how to avoid lookalike apps with similar names.
The free fallback: VLC
VLC is free, open source and available on iPhone, iPad and Android. You can paste an M3U URL as a network stream and start watching in seconds. It has no guide grid and no Xtream login screen, so it works best as a quick test: if a channel plays in VLC but not in your main app, the problem is the app, not the stream.
How to set up a player app on your phone
The steps are almost identical in every app:
- Install the player from the App Store or Google Play, and check the developer name matches the official one.
- Open the app and choose to add a playlist or user.
- Pick the login type your provider gave you: Xtream Codes (server URL, username, password) or an M3U URL.
- Add the EPG (XMLTV) link if your provider gave you a separate one.
- Wait for channels and the guide to load, then mark your favorites.
- Turn on picture-in-picture in your phone’s settings if you want playback to continue over other apps.
If you are not sure which login type to use, our IPTV player app setup guide explains the difference and how to fix common loading errors.
What to check before you pay
- Touch-first design. Look at screenshots. If they all show a TV remote layout, skip it on a phone.
- Login support. Make sure the app accepts the format your service uses.
- Device limits. Premium licenses often cover a set number of devices. Check before buying on a phone, a tablet and a TV.
- Mobile data. Live HD streams use a lot of data. Prefer Wi-Fi or lower the quality if your app allows it.
- Update history. An app that has not been updated in years may break after the next iOS or Android release.
IPTV technology itself is legal, but services that rebroadcast channels without permission are not. Use a player with a legitimate service and check the rules where you live.
Which phone or tablet player should you choose?
On iPhone and iPad, start with iMPlayer, especially if you also own an Apple TV. On Android, start with Televizo and only pay to remove ads once you know you will use it. Keep VLC installed for testing either way.
The player is only half the setup. If you still need a service to load into it, our plan, IPTV Journal, costs $89 for 12 months and works with these apps through M3U or Xtream Codes. You can see the plan details here.
FAQ
What is the best IPTV player app for iPhone?
For most people it is iMPlayer, thanks to its guide, catch-up support and matching Apple TV app. If you only want something basic and cheap, Smarters Player Lite or the free VLC app also work.
Can I use TiviMate on my Android phone?
TiviMate’s own Google Play listing says it is designed for Android TV and not optimized for touch devices. It may install on some phones, but a phone-first app like Televizo will be far easier to use.
Do IPTV player apps include channels?
No. Player apps only play content. You need a playlist or login from a service you subscribe to, and that service is responsible for having the rights to what it streams.
Can I cast from an IPTV app on my phone to my TV?
Many players support AirPlay on Apple devices or Chromecast on Android, but support varies by app and stream format. Check the app description, or install the same player directly on a TV device for a more stable picture.
How much mobile data does IPTV use?
It depends on the stream quality your service sends. HD streams can use well over a gigabyte per hour, so watch on Wi-Fi when you can and check your carrier plan before streaming long matches on cellular data.
