To watch March Madness without cable, you need two things: CBS, which you can get free with an antenna, and the three Warner Bros. Discovery channels, TBS, TNT and truTV, which stream on HBO Max. A live TV streaming service such as YouTube TV, Hulu + Live TV or DirecTV can cover all four networks in one app, but usually costs more. Planning now, in the fall, gives you time to test your setup before the 2027 tournament tips off in mid-March.
Why March Madness is tricky without cable
The men’s NCAA tournament is shared between CBS Sports and TNT Sports. Games are spread across CBS, TBS, TNT and truTV, often at the same time on opening Thursday and Friday. A single free option rarely covers everything.
The Final Four and national championship alternate between CBS and the TBS family of networks. In 2026 they aired on TBS, TNT and truTV, so under that rotation CBS is in line for the 2027 Final Four, scheduled for early April at Ford Field in Detroit. Confirm the network when the official 2027 schedule is announced.
The women’s tournament is a separate deal and airs on ESPN networks and ABC, so it needs a different setup (more on that below).
Your options compared
Prices are approximate and were checked at the time of writing; streaming prices often change before spring, so confirm on each provider’s site.
| Option | Covers | Approx. cost |
|---|---|---|
| HD antenna | CBS games only | One-time, roughly $20 to $60 |
| HBO Max (Standard or Premium) | TBS, TNT and truTV games | About $18.49 to $22.99/mo |
| Paramount+ (plan with live CBS) | CBS games | Check current tiers on Paramount+ |
| Antenna + HBO Max | All four networks | About $18.49/mo for March and early April |
| YouTube TV, Hulu + Live TV, DirecTV | All four networks in one app | Typically $80+/mo |
| Sling | TBS, TNT and truTV; CBS not included | Check the current Sling lineup |
The best-value setup: antenna plus HBO Max
For most cord cutters, an antenna for CBS and one or two months of HBO Max for TBS, TNT and truTV is the cheapest way to see every game legally.
- Test your antenna in February. Scan for channels and make sure your local CBS station comes in reliably. Our best indoor TV antenna guide helps if you need a new one.
- Subscribe to HBO Max just before Selection Sunday. In 2026, live tournament games on HBO Max were included in the Standard and Premium plans, not the cheapest ad-supported tier. Check which plan includes live sports before you pay.
- Install the HBO Max app on your TV and sign in ahead of time, so you are not entering passwords at tip-off.
- Cancel after the championship if you don’t need HBO Max for anything else.
If an antenna is not an option where you live, Paramount+ can replace it for CBS games, provided your plan includes your live local CBS station. Our guide to getting local channels without cable compares antennas and streaming options for local stations.
The all-in-one setup: a live TV streaming service
If you want every game in a single guide with a cloud DVR, a live TV service is the most convenient choice. At the time of writing, YouTube TV, Hulu + Live TV and DirecTV carried CBS, TBS, TNT and truTV, depending on your area and plan. Sling carries the Turner networks but not CBS, so Sling users still need an antenna.
A live TV service also unlocks the NCAA’s March Madness Live app. Signing in with a participating provider lets you stream games from all four networks there, including on phones and tablets. Without a provider login, the app is mostly limited to highlights and previews, so don’t count on it as a free way to watch.
Covering the women’s tournament
The women’s NCAA tournament airs on ESPN networks and ABC. ABC games are free with an antenna, and ESPN Unlimited, around $31.99 a month at the time of writing, covers ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPNU. Our ESPN streaming service guide explains the plans. Most live TV services carry both sets of networks, which is a strong argument for that route if you follow both tournaments.
Tips for opening weekend
- Use multiview. YouTube TV and some other apps let you watch several games on one screen, which helps on the first Thursday and Friday.
- Mind your bandwidth. Two or three streams at once can push a slower connection. Plan for about 15 to 25 Mbps per HD stream.
- Know your devices. Our cord cutting guide covers which streaming devices and apps work well together.
- Watch for spoilers. Score alerts on your phone can ruin a delayed stream. Turn them off if you are watching a few seconds behind.
Some households also keep a general live TV subscription year-round for news and entertainment. Ours, the IPTV Journal plan, is 12 months for $89. For the tournament itself, stick to licensed sources like the ones above; unofficial streams are unlicensed and notoriously unreliable during the busiest sports weekend of the year.
Which March Madness setup should you choose?
If you want the lowest cost, pair an antenna with a short HBO Max subscription. If you value one app, a DVR and the March Madness Live app, choose a live TV service for March and early April, then cancel or downgrade. If you also follow the women’s tournament, a live TV service with both ESPN and the Turner networks keeps things simple.
FAQ
Can I watch March Madness for free?
Partly. CBS games are free over the air with an antenna, and free trials from streaming services may cover some of the tournament. Games on TBS, TNT and truTV need a paid service such as HBO Max or a live TV package.
Is March Madness on HBO Max?
Yes. In recent tournaments, games airing on TBS, TNT and truTV have also streamed live on HBO Max, in plans that include live sports. Check the current plan details before subscribing.
Does Sling TV have March Madness?
Sling carries TBS, TNT and truTV in its lineups, but not CBS. Sling users need an antenna or Paramount+ for CBS games, including the 2027 Final Four if it airs on CBS as the rotation suggests.
Is the March Madness Live app free?
The app is free to download, but full live game access generally requires signing in with a participating TV provider. Without one, expect highlights and limited content rather than every game.
When does March Madness 2027 start?
The 2027 men’s tournament begins in mid-March, with the Final Four scheduled for early April in Detroit. Check the NCAA’s official schedule closer to the date for exact game times and networks.
