To learn how to watch ESPN on Firestick, you only need two things: the free ESPN app from the Amazon Appstore and a subscription that unlocks it. That can be ESPN’s own direct plan, ESPN Unlimited at around $31.99 a month at the time of writing, or a live TV service that carries ESPN, such as Sling Orange, YouTube TV, Hulu + Live TV, Fubo or DirecTV Stream.
This guide focuses on the Fire TV side: installing the app, choosing the right plan for what you watch, and fixing the problems people run into most.
Step by step: install ESPN on a Fire TV Stick
- From the Fire TV home screen, open Find and select Search.
- Type or say “ESPN” with the Alexa remote, then select the official ESPN app.
- Select Get or Download. The app is free to install.
- Open the app. Choose to subscribe to an ESPN plan, sign in with an existing ESPN account, or sign in with your TV provider.
- If the TV shows an activation code, enter it on your phone or computer at the address on screen and log in there.
- Return to the app. Live channels appear under the live or watch section, and events show in the schedule.
You do not need to sideload anything. The official ESPN app is in the Amazon Appstore for current Fire TV models.
Which subscription unlocks what
| Option | Approx. price | What you can watch in the ESPN app |
|---|---|---|
| ESPN Select | Around $13.99/mo or $139.99/yr | Streaming-only events (the former ESPN+), not the ESPN TV channels |
| ESPN Unlimited | Around $31.99/mo or $319.99/yr | ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, SEC Network, ACC Network and more, plus Select content |
| ESPN Unlimited + FOX One | Around $39.99/mo | ESPN Unlimited plus FOX, FS1, FS2 and Big Ten Network in the FOX One app |
| Sling Orange | Around $45.99/mo | ESPN, ESPN2 and ESPN3 through Sling and a provider sign-in |
| YouTube TV | Around $82.99/mo | ESPN networks plus locals, news and unlimited DVR |
| Hulu + Live TV | From around $82.99/mo with ads | ESPN networks plus Disney+ and Hulu |
| Fubo / DirecTV Stream | Around $88.99/mo (Fubo Pro); DirecTV varies | ESPN networks plus regional sports in many markets |

Using a live TV service on Fire TV
If you already pay for a live TV service, you have two ways to watch ESPN on the Firestick:
- Inside the service’s own app, such as Sling or YouTube TV, where ESPN sits in the channel guide.
- Inside the ESPN app, by choosing the TV provider sign-in and selecting your service. This gives you ESPN’s extra camera angles and on-demand replays where available.
Fire TV also pulls live channels from supported apps into its Live tab and channel guide, so once you are signed in, ESPN can appear alongside your other live channels.
Which Firestick works best for ESPN
- Fire TV Stick 4K or 4K Max: best for live sports, with Wi-Fi 6 or 6E support on recent models and enough memory to keep the app responsive.
- Older or Lite models: work, but may feel slow with live sports apps. Clear the app cache or restart if the menu lags.
- Ethernet adapter: a wired connection is the best fix for buffering during big games.

ESPN games that air on ABC
Some of ESPN’s biggest events, including college football and NBA games, air on ABC rather than an ESPN cable channel. On a Firestick you can watch those in a few ways:
- In the ESPN app with ESPN Unlimited, which includes ESPN-produced games simulcast on ABC.
- Through a live TV service that carries your local ABC station.
- Free over the air with an antenna, if you use a Fire TV smart TV with a built-in tuner or a network tuner app.
Common ESPN-on-Firestick problems
- “Not available in your area”: some games are blacked out based on location. Check the event’s details in the app; the local broadcast may be on ABC or another channel.
- Channel locked even after subscribing: make sure you are signed in with the same account you paid with, and that the plan is Unlimited if you want the TV channels.
- Buffering: restart the Firestick, switch to 5 GHz Wi-Fi or Ethernet, and close other apps.
- App will not open: update it from the Appstore, or uninstall and reinstall.
Avoid apps or “loaded” Firesticks that promise free ESPN. IPTV technology is legal, but unlicensed channel resellers are not, and they are a common source of malware. If you want to compare an annual all-in-one plan, our own IPTV Journal plan is $89 for 12 months; whichever service you use, check what it is licensed to show.
Which option should you choose?
- ESPN TV channels without a bundle: ESPN Unlimited.
- ESPN plus FOX sports: the ESPN Unlimited and FOX One bundle.
- Cheapest bundle with ESPN: Sling Orange.
- ESPN plus locals and DVR: YouTube TV or Hulu + Live TV.
